Butter Lane

Elvis- banana cupcake with peanut butter frosting

At Butter Lane, the year-and-a-half old cupcake shop on St. Mark’s Place, there is no question that the frosting gets more attention than the cake. Cake is available in three flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and banana. Frosting, on the other hand, is available in 20 different flavors, including strawberry, maple pecan, cream cheese, peanut butter, caramel, grapefruit ginger, blueberry, key lime, and cinnamon-honey.

With a name like Butter Lane, it’s no surprise that the shop goes for a charming retro vibe, though almost by default, because of it’s location it exudes a hipster vibe as well.

A bright yellow wooden sign nestled high above marks the shop’s location, and inside, a fun, colorful chalkboard lists prices and flavors.

You can combine any cupcake with any frosting. They provide you with a list of suggested combinations. The suggestions below are all named after staffers.

My first cupcake was a vanilla with maple pecan frosting, one of the shop’s most popular combinations. The cake was rich, buttery and slightly dense. The frosting had a very strong maple flavor. It had the confectioners sugar frosting texture that I favor. The tops and edges of some of the cupcakes, particularly the banana, were darker and firmer than is usual with cupcakes, slightly reminiscent of a muffin top. You can see the dark brown edges in the photo of the Elvis above. This does not bother me in the least, as I actually enjoy the firmer edges, but I felt it was worth mentioning. I thoroughly enjoyed the peanut butter frosting on the Elvis, which surprised me, as I am typically not a fan of peanut butter in cupcakes. I think the sturdiness of the banana cupcake complimented the peanut butter frosting well.

Vanilla cupcake with key lime frosting

You’ve heard me say this before, but I have a special place in my heart for any dessert with lemon or lime. The key lime frosting is perfectly sweet and tangy. Like many of Butter Lane’s frosting flavors, I wouldn’t pair it with any cupcake other than vanilla.

Though the frosting is the star of the show at Butter Lane, the bakers have perfected the three flavors of cake. They are consistently moist and flavorful. The frosting choices add a fun and whimsical element to your cupcake shop experience. As long as you like the texture of Butter Lane’s cake and frostings, there is no question you will find a flavor combination to suit your preferences.
