Finally, multiple posts that live up to the blog’s title. Last night I attended Thai Me Down at Ronnarong Thai Tapas Bar, hosted by the lovely Christine and Citysearch. Yesterday marked the debut of Thai Me Down, which will take place on the last Wednesday of every month. Each round, a new Thai ingredient will be showcased, with free drink samples and appetizers that feature the ingredient. This month, the ingredient was lemongrass.
The event was held on the patio of Ronnarong. It was on the smaller side, but with the cool breeze blowing last night, and it provided the perfect setting for an intimate gathering.
When we arrived, we were greeted by the friendly bartenders who offered us a shot of sake that we were to follow up with our choice of condiments, including peanuts, lemongrass, chilis, ginger, lime, onions, and fried shrimp. My favorite beverage of the night, which I didn’t snap a picture of, was the lemongrass infused champagne. I don’t know if they offer that on the regular, but they ought to. It was outstanding.
In addition to the sake, we had our choice of cocktails from the drink menu. Above, the Sake Sunray, with coconut, chili, lime, and lemongrass. Below, the Thai sangria made with sake, ginger, and lemongrass.
The first tasting was a hot and sour chicken soup, a clear broth with lemongrass, chili, lime juice and mushrooms. This was followed by a sardine salad, with lemongrass, basil, peppers, onions and a spicy dressing. One of the coolest parts of our tasting were the plates you see in front of the dish below. They are made out of pressed banana leaves and are pretty much as biodegradable as flatware gets.
The final dish we enjoyed was a Panang curry with string beans, red pepper, and either tofu or chicken and rice. I love Thai curries. This one was not too spicy and the vegetables were very fresh and still crunchy.
Thai Me Down happens on the last Wednesday of every month. If you have an idea for an ingredient or dish to be featured in the future, Citysearch would love to know! Many thanks to Christine, Citysearch, and Ronnarong for arranging the event.
