Last night, my friend Leah and I went for appetizers and drinks at Art Bar in the Sonesta Hotel. I went to Art Bar for the first time back in May for their patio opening party and had a fantastic time. The patio setting is unbeatable. Located behind the Sonesta Hotel on the waterfront, it offers calm, scenic views of the Charles and Boston.
Leah ordered the pan-seared sea scallops with avocado, chili oil, and citrus herb salad. This dish got top marks for presentation. According to Leah, the scallops melted in your mouth and were cooked to perfection. The creamy avocado was fresh and delicious and mellowed the heat from the chili oil. The citrus on top gave the dish a nice sour kick without being overpowering.
Any other day, I would have ordered the summer beets with pea greens, goat cheese, and toasted pistachio vinaigrette, but I have had beets a few too many times the past few days. Instead I opted for the Boston bibb salad with spicy pecans, fresh blackberries, goat cheese, and vermont maple dressing.
The pecans were not too spicy. They had a strong cumin and curry flavor that contrasted the more mild goat cheese and bibb lettuce. I very much liked the flavor combination of the four components. One thing for sure though, the dressing was not maple. I did not taste any maple and it was much too oily, especially for such a mild lettuce. Other than the dressing, it was tasty and a nicely put together salad.
Service, on the other hand, left something to be desired. Our waiter was extremely inattentive. He did not check on us once after our dishes arrived and we waited several minutes with empty water glasses before we could catch his attention to ask for more. Though this aspect was unfortunate, it was not severe enough to put a damper on our meal, especially with the pleasant setting.
I admit, if you want to find out about the latest free food opportunities, it’s best to look for those on my Twitter feed. But, just for you loyal readers, here is a little-known secret. The Sonesta Hotel has free cookies. All the time. A different kind every day. If you’ve ever had them, or you go now and find them, comment back and let me know. Enjoy!
