Super 88

Thai iced tea

What’s better than cheap Asian food? Over a dozen varieties of cheap Asian food all in one spot. Super88 is an Asian supermarket and food court on the border between Boston and Allston. Due its location and affordability, the food court seems to always be teeming with BU students, though it is popular amongst college students from all of the area schools. And for good reason. Cuisines available at Super 88 include Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Indian and more.

Most dishes are under $10 and many are far cheaper. Above, beef bulgogi with rice, salad, and bean sprouts from Misono Grill. Below, spicy pork bulgogi.

Though I prefer them baked, the steamed red bean buns, only $2.50 for an order of three, are a perfect snack or side dish.

Vietnamese sandwiches are known for being inexpensive, and the one sold at Super 88 is the cheapest I have found yet, at only $3.25. Though to a certain extent, you get what you pay for. My tofu banh mi was not bad, but I have certainly had far better. There is too much bread for the amount of filling. And there was too little of the vegetables I love: pickled carrots, daikon, cucumber and cilantro. The sandwiches do contain a fair amount of meat or tofu though, so if the meat is what you’re after, go forth and try it.
