This post could have been titled “Cupcake of the Month Club,” but Bangerang is so much more fun to say. One of the birthday presents my roommate Julie received this year was a membership to a Cupcake of the Month Club. The cupcakes are made by Bangerang Bake Shop, based in Illinois. Upon receiving the first delivery, we learned that Bangerang’s signature product is the cupcake in a jar. Each cupcake comes neatly packed into its own Ball jar. This was definitely unusual, to say the least, although not a bad vessel for both transportation and preservation.
The two October flavors were pumpkin with cream cheese frosting and BangarangBOO, a chocolate cupcake with orange-colored vanilla buttercream. It would be difficult to remove the entire cake, so we ended up eating them out of the jar with a fork. Because of this, and because you cannot hold them in your hand, it felt less like eating a cupcake. The layer of frosting in the middle also made them more cake-like as opposed to cupcake.
In my opinion, you can never go wrong when there’s cream cheese frosting involved. The pumpkin cake itself was a little heavy on the spices for my taste, but paired with cream cheese frosting, it was more than okay. The chocolate cake, which came decorated in Halloween candy, had a stronger chocolate flavor than I was expecting. The sugary frosting was a little dense for such an intense cake, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Both cakes were surprisingly moist for having sat on our kitchen counter for a few days, but I guess that is what happens when you seal it in a Ball jar. The Cupcake of the Month Club would be a fun gift for anyone who loves cake or cupcakes. The element of surprise-you never know which two flavors you are going to receive-adds to the fun and it is definitely a gift that keeps on giving.
