Last Wednesday following the snowstorm, I met my roommate Julie for dinner at Zing Pizza. I’ve eaten at Zing once before, but I only had their gluten-free pies that time. Other than that, the only other time I’ve had Zing Pizza is when they’ve sampled it at Healthworks (odd? slightly). Zing is not a run-of-the-mill pizza joint. They make oblong thin-crust pies made with organic sauces, hormone-free chicken, and locally sourced vegetables when possible. Julie and I decided to split the Blue October, the most non-traditional variety, with roasted butternut squash sauce, fresh baby spinach, mozzarella, caramelized onions and blue cheese. We swapped out the blue cheese for goat cheese.
The pies are large and could easily feed three people. The flavor combination of squash, caramelized onions and goat cheese is a favorite of mine. Turning the squash into a sauce makes it less unwieldy than chunks scattered across the top, though it does mean than there is slightly less squash than I’d like. The crust was tender in the middle and crispy along the outside. We ordered two salads as well, and while we appreciated having some greenery, they were nothing to write home about. Zing rotates its pizza offerings throughout the year. In the warmer months, they offer a wonderful pesto pie with slices of yellow tomato. The restaurant is located up a short flight of stairs on Mass Ave in Porter Square. The interior is small, but cozy. It was warm and bustling last Wednesday and was a welcome respite from the cold and snow. I am happy to say that in addition to making an effort to source good ingredients, Zing makes an excellent pizza. If you are in the mood for a slightly non-traditional pizza, I definitely recommend it.

This pizza was delish – highly recommended!
I’ve never been to Zing Pizza but this pizza certainly looks good. I love the combo of butternut squash with caramelized onions!
The Blue October is my favorite! After an intense workout at the gym last week I thought I deserved a slice of pizza, so I walked to Zing and got a slice of Blue October. I like it with the blue cheese but goat cheese sounds good too.
