Iggy’s Bread – The Shop

If you have eaten a sandwich at a cafe or restaurant anywhere in the Greater Boston area, chances are, whether or not you were aware, that you enjoyed it on Iggy’s bread. Iggy’s the gold standard as far as bread products go in Boston. Their cranberry pecan rolls can be found on the counter at virtually every coffee shop and I’d say some very high percentage of sandwiches in this city are served on one of Iggy’s breads like the 7-grain or brioche.

They also sell at some farmers’ markets including the Copley market. A few months ago I learned that Iggy’s has its own storefront in Cambridge. Upon further examination, I found that it is tucked away far down an industrial road near Fresh Pond. If you’re going for the first time, it’s easy to miss. The entrance is set back just a bit from the road, and the storefront is very clean and elegant set against the industrial surroundings. That is, once you actually spot it, it helps to look for the turquoise Iggy logo, brick front and glass door.

The shop offers several rolls, baguettes, bagels, traditional loaves, focaccia, and crackers. On this particular day the pastry selection  included fruit tarts, linzer cookies, jam thumbprints, sour cherry almond cake and blueberry bread pudding.

We picked up a pecan sticky bun. Not as laden with sticky brown sugar sauce as some other sticky buns, it allowed the actual bun to take center stage instead of the topping. A fitting choice as Iggy’s is a bread company after all. And the bread part was lovely– chewy and very moist in the center, flakier around the edges, a light coating of sticky topping and a nice sprinkling of pecans. Sure you can purchase Iggy’s bread at gourmet shops around the city, but true bread fiends will appreciate the complete selection fresh out of the oven.
